The 24-hour clock starts when the story is published, not when you first see it. Once it runs out, the story is no longer publicly available — not in the app, not on tiktok.com and not in any story viewer. If a story matters to you, save it while it’s still live.

How to tell if someone has an active story

In the TikTok app, accounts with an active story show a coloured ring around their profile picture; tap the picture to watch. Without the app, type the username into the TikTok Story Viewer — it lists every story that is still live, with how long ago each one was posted.
